Flat Roof Directive

The Flat Roof Directive or "Technical Rule for Waterproofing" is a set of rules drawn up and published by the Central Association of the German Roofing Trade – Association of Roofing, Wall and Waterproofing Technology – e.V. and the Main Association of the German Construction Industry e.V. – Federal Department of Building Waterproofing. This set of rules deals with the waterproofing of used and unused roof surfaces.

Flat roofs are usually roofs with a roof pitch ≤ 10°, roofs with a pitch range between 5° and 20° fall under the category "flat pitched roof".

It should be noted that the Flat Roof Directive does not replace the applicable DIN standards and regulations. For professional execution, both technical rules and applicable DIN standards should always be observed and adhered to. The Flat Roof Directive, as well as DIN 18531 et seq., is considered the general state of the art for waterproofing work.

The Flat Roofs Directive consists of a total of 5 chapters and 2 annexes:

  1. General rules
  2. Stress and requirements
  3. Planning and execution of functional layers
  4. Details
  5. Care and maintenance

Annex I: Wind suction protection of roofs with waterproofing with a slope of less than 5°

Annex II: Details sketches

In addition to the waterproofing of unused roofs, the areas of application of the Flat Roofs Directive also include the waterproofing of roof surfaces with extensive greening, waterproofing of used roof and ceiling surfaces (including balconies, terraces, loggias and pergolas), waterproofing of roof surfaces with intensive greening, waterproofing of drivable roof and ceiling surfaces, waterproofing of earth-covered ceiling surfaces and the waterproofing of parking decks. Among other things, it does not apply to the waterproofing of sub-roofs or the waterproofing of interiors according to DIN 18534.
