Printed glass

With the help of the screen printing process, partially opaque surfaces can be printed on glass. Here, ceramic layers are already burned into the surface during glass production. In this way, more or less radiation transmissions can be reduced at these points (= sun protection effect), depending on the intensity of the printing - i.e. the ratio of printed and transparent surface.

More about printed glass

The print is usually made up of an even dot or line grid. In terms of shape, colour and patterns, there are no limits to the design of glass surfaces: from photorealistic images and graphics to structures and drawings, everything is possible.

Insulating glass, toughened safety glass (ESG) or laminated safety glass (LSG) are suitable for printing. Printed glass surfaces are often used as privacy screens indoors or for external sun protection systems.

Notes on planning

Bird-friendly building with glass

Birds orient themselves primarily visually. Due to her lateral eyes and her resulting "all-round view", her stereoscopic vision is severely limited. They find it difficult to recognize glass as an obstacle, especially if the landscape is reflected in it or if there is a view through the building. Printed glass can disarm these "bird traps". However, the sticking with some bird of prey silhouettes, which is still common today, is practically ineffective.

When planning bird-friendly glass facades, the palm rule can help:

Many birds are used to flying through dense branches. A "hole" that is about the size of the palm of your hand is enough for you. Gaps in the patterns of the printed glass must be correspondingly smaller.

Recommendations for the design of the patterns:

  • Horizontal lines: at least 3 mm wide at a distance of 3 cm, at least 5 mm at a maximum distance of 5 cm
  • Vertical lines: at least 5 mm wide, max. distance 10 cm; Condition: Good contrast to the background, otherwise wider lines are required
  • Degree of coverage for dot grids: At least 25 % for small dots, at least 15 % for dots from Ø=30 mm.
  • Apply markings to the outside wherever possible!
  • With a coverage ratio of at least 15%, you are on the safe side
