In the case of an external thermal insulation composite system, a fire barrier (or fall protection) is a non-combustible system component from the manufacturer, e.g. made of mineral wool, which is installed above windows in the insulation thickness of the external thermal insulation composite system. Fire barriers may be necessary if a thermal insulation composite system with normally flammable insulation materials must meet the property of "flame retardant".
The required height and the lateral protrusion of the fire barrier must be provided in accordance with the manufacturer's approval regulations. Under certain conditions, e.g. if the window frame is (partially) in the insulation plane or with insulation thicknesses >30 cm, the fire barrier must also be designed in the area of the side window reveals or all around. Detailed designs, e.g. in the area of roller shutter boxes, must be taken into account in good time during planning.
