The classification and evaluation of the burglary resistance of door elements, windows, curtain walls, lattice elements and closures is regulated in the European standard DIN EN 1627, which distinguishes between 7 different RC classes (RC for resistance-class). In addition to the actual constructions (windows, doors, etc.), their locks, locking cylinders, security fittings and fillings (e.g. glazing) are also tested for the classification into the various classes. This means that a component only corresponds to an RC class if all associated components have also been tested accordingly. In addition, the new DIN EN 1627 standard also sets requirements for the surrounding wall in its Annex NA.5. Burglary resistance is divided into seven RC classes as follows:
- RC 1 N: Only low burglary protection. A component of this category does not have to prove a certain resistance time to a standardised burglary attempt in accordance with EN 1630:2011. The added N means that national provisions may be included in this category. For example, there is no requirement for glazing in Germany, but there are in Austria. However, requirements are placed on the fittings and the surrounding walls.
- RC 2 N: Only low burglary protection against perpetrators with simple tools who do not want to make noise or take any risks. Resistance time to a standardised burglary attempt according to EN 1630 at least 3 minutes. The added N means that national provisions may be included in this category. For example, there is no requirement for glazing in Germany, but there are in Austria. However, requirements are placed on the fittings and the surrounding walls.
- RC 2: Limited burglary protection against perpetrators with simple tools who do not want to make noise or take risks. Resistance time to a standardised burglary attempt according to EN 1630 at least 3 minutes. Requirements for the resistance class of glazing, locks, locking cylinders, security fittings and glazing/fillings as well as the surrounding walls.
- RC 3: Medium burglary protection against perpetrators with simple tools who do not want to make noise or take risks. Resistance time to a standardised burglary attempt according to EN 1630 at least 5 minutes. Requirements for the resistance class of glazing, locks, locking cylinders, security fittings and glazing/fillings as well as the surrounding walls.
- RC 4: Medium burglary protection, even against well-equipped perpetrators. Resistance time to a standardised burglary attempt according to EN 1630 at least 10 minutes. Requirements for the resistance class of glazing, locks, locking cylinders, security fittings and glazing/fillings as well as the surrounding walls.
