Wood fibre insulation boards, also known as soft fibre boards, are organic insulation materials made from plant fibres and are made from softwood waste. The shredded wood is pressed under pressure and high temperatures, causing the fibers to felt and stick together. The insulating effect is created by the air pockets between the fibres. To improve the fire behaviour and against mould infestation, ammonium phosphate or similar is usually added. Wood fibre insulation boards are therefore resistant to rotting, vermin and fungal infestation, are permeable to diffusion and are easy to process. Due to their high specific heat capacity and high bulk density, they achieve good thermal insulation in summer and have good sound insulation properties. Wood fibre insulation boards can only absorb a small amount of moisture and swell with prolonged moisture penetration. Although production is made from waste products, it is still energy-intensive. The dimensionally stable, elastic insulation boards can be composted or reused and are available in thicknesses of 20 - 240 mm.
