More about steel beams U, UPE, UPN

Steel beams are divided into the following standard profiles:

  • U (inclined inner surfaces of the flanges)
  • UPE (parallel inner surfaces of the flanges)
  • UPN (inclined inner surfaces of the flanges)
Notes on planning

These profiles are rarely used for bolted connections due to their inclined inner surfaces of the flanges. They are generally welded. Areas of application are, for example, cross beams in the form of purlins.

These standard profiles are rarely used today, but are cheaper than profiles with parallel flange insides.
