Born in 1941 in Osaka, Japan. Self-taught education in architecture. In 1969, Tadao Ando Architect & Associates was founded. Some of the most important works include the Church of the Light, the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, and the Chichu Art Museum. Awarded the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) Prize for the Sumiyoshi Terraced House in 1979, the Japan Art Academy Prize 1993, the Pritzker Architecture Prize 1995, the Person of Cultural Merit (Japan) 2003, the Gold Medal of the International Union of Architects (UIA) 2005, John F. Kennedy Center Gold Medal in the Arts 2010, Shimpei Goto Award 2010, Order of Culture (Japan) 2010, Commander of the Order of Art and Letters (France) 2013, Grand Officer of the Order of Merit (Italy) 2015 and Isamu Noguchi Award 2016. Solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) 1991 and the Centre Pompidou 1993. Since 1997 he has been a professor at the University of Tokyo. Since 2003 Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo.
