Valerio Olgiati studied architecture at ETH Zurich. After living and working first in Zurich and later in Los Angeles, he opened his own office in Zurich in 1996 and in Flims with his wife Tamara Olgiati in 2008.

His most important buildings include the schoolhouse in Paspels, the Yellow House in Flims, a house for a musician in Scharans and the Museum of the Swiss National Park in Zernez. His key projects include a winery for Carnasciale, Italy, a music hall for Gut Hohenbeilstein in Germany, and a high-rise building in Lima, Peru. There are more than a dozen monographs on his work. The most recent solo exhibition of his work was in the winter of 2011/12 at MoMA Tokyo.

He has taught as a visiting professor at ETH Zurich, AA London and Cornell University, New York. In 2009, he was the Kenzo Tange Chair at Harvard University, Cambridge. Since 2002 he has been a full professor at the Accademia di architettura Mendrisio at the Università della Svizzera italiana.
