Rolf Mühlethaler, born in Bern in 1956, studied architecture at the HTL Burgdorf after completing his apprenticeship as a structural draughtsman. After working for Max Schlup in Biel and Frank Geiser in Bern, he founded his own architectural office in 1985. Since then, he has implemented numerous innovative projects for private and public clients, including residential buildings, office buildings, schools, sports facilities and infrastructure projects. His work has been recognized with several awards, both nationally and internationally. A special interest is in urban development, architectural development in existing buildings and design in the context of urban spaces.
In addition to his practical work, Mühlethaler was a visiting professor of design and building planning at the University of the Arts in Berlin in 2015/16. He is also involved in various competition juries, urban planning commissions and advisory boards, including being a member of the Lucerne City Planning Commission (2000–2008), President of the Bern Cityscape Commission (2004) and since 2011 he has been a member of the design advisory board for the new construction of the Semmering Base Tunnel in Austria.
He has received numerous prizes for his work, including the Prix Lignum for the three longhouses of the Freilager in Zurich and the "Good Construction" awards in the canton of Lucerne (1999) and the canton of Zurich (2006). His projects have been presented in several exhibitions and honored in specialist publications. Rolf Mühlethaler stands for architecture that respects established structures, cleverly integrates urban developments and implements modern living concepts in an innovative way.
