Harris + Kurrle Architekten was founded in 2000 by Joel Harris and Volker Kurrle. Two competition successes and their realisation were the starting point for the joint work, which has since been determined by the planning of public buildings. In the first few years, both taught at the Institute of Urban Design at the University of Stuttgart, where they dealt with the organisation and design of urban and landscape spaces. Since then, the tension between architecture (object) and urban space (context) has shaped the work of the office, which employs around 30 architects.
The common goal of all work is to formulate a clear and effective position on the given situation through each intervention. The goal is always to establish a dialogue between object and context.
The projects are characterized by the conviction that only a clear formal language, supported by a self-limitation in the use of materials, enables the creation of a strong relationship between object and context. The space programme is therefore organised in the most concise and simple form possible. In this way, the building can stand on its own as an object of its own value. Furthermore, the aim is to make the relationship to the context as clear and effective as possible through precise setting. In combination with the clear organisation of the floor plans, this creates recognisable places of timeless quality - proven over the years by numerous prizes and awards.
The projects planned in the office include a wide range of functions and typologies. Tailor-made buildings are planned and implemented for various clients in interdisciplinary teams. The aspects of functionality, cost-effectiveness and sustainability are understood as a natural and integral part of architectural quality.
