The buildings of Buchner Bründler are characterized by a dialogue with the place. The building reacts to the context and expands it by taking existing structures further: the Volta Zentrum residential and commercial building, with its diversity brought about by the urban environment, reshaped a district. The Hotel Nomad gives a historic façade a weighty presence. The respect for a rustico in Linescio gave rise to a house within a house. And in the expansion of the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio, a self-confident building will sink into the ground in order to intervene only gently in the effectiveness of the existing building.
Architecture is not committed to self-repeating formalism, as each project develops its own identity. This also applies to the large number of smaller residential buildings. These works are a field of experimentation: they explore the tense relationship between intimacy and the opening of the façade, while weaving the needs of the client into the architecture – as in the case of the residential building in Lörrach or the house on Bläsiring.
The cohesion of the work lies in the method, in the approach to building: this includes conceptual work on the spatial program, as well as the strongly articulated craftsmanship and a conscious use of materiality. The search for honesty in the material often leads to the use of archaic-looking, raw concrete, which creates a sense of security through its atmospheric density and intensity.
